Cuno is one of the most memorable characters in Disco Elysium, a foul-mouthed, hostile kid who pelts you with insults from the moment you meet him. Handling him well requires patience, the right skill checks, and an understanding of his pride-fueled psychology. Get it right, and you unlock one of the game's most rewarding character arcs. Get it wrong, and you lose XP, reputation with Kim, and a genuinely moving conclusion.
Grab a G FUEL Energy Formula, settle in, and here is everything you need to know about Cuno.
Who Is Cuno?

Cuno is a 12-year-old boy living near the Martinaise waterfront in Revachol. His real name is Kuuno de Ruyter. Aggressive and defensive by default, his hostility masks a difficult home situation involving an abusive, drug-dealing father, whom he lived with in the Capeside Apartments. He spends his days with his companion Cunoesse, sniffing speed, vandalizing property, and building up his shack near the hanged man's body.
Cuno dropped out of school two years before the events of the game. He refers to himself in the third person as a defense mechanism, prefers stimulant drugs over hallucinogens, and, despite denying it, secretly enjoys reading the Man from Hjelmdall book series. His attitude is a wall built to survive his environment, and recognizing that is the key to every interaction with him.
First Contact: How to Talk to Cuno
When you first encounter Cuno, he will be throwing rocks at the hanged man's corpse while Cunoesse eggs him on. He will insult you immediately. Your instinct might be to apologize, push back, or try to reason with him. Resist all three.
-
Do not apologize to Cuno. He reads apologies as weakness, which deepens his contempt.
-
Do not belittle him or talk down to him. Condescension closes off his storyline entirely.
-
Do not thank him for anything. This is another sign of weakness in his eyes.
-
Do not force your worldview on him. Cuno hates being lectured.
The best early approach is to match his energy without aggression and show genuine curiosity. Empathy checks are your most valuable tool. A successful Legendary Empathy passive check lets you see past his facade, revealing the root of his behavior and opening up softer dialogue paths. The Disco Elysium skill check difficulty tiers set Legendary at 14, meaning you need at least 8 in Empathy to pass it passively.
You also get an easy +25 XP from the Conceptualization skill by visiting his shack, looking at the pig's head on display, and then saying: "Cool pig-head. I liked it. I got one too, this one." Short, weird, and perfect for getting on his level.
Completing the "Add Even More Beauty to the Wall" side quest before your Cuno interactions also makes his checks easier.
Should You Punch Cuno?

Only in Disco Elysium will players face a moral quandary over whether to punch an angry 12-year-old. But strangely, punching Cuno can be a good thing.
Punching Cuno requires passing a red Physical Instrument Challenging check. Here is how each outcome plays out:
If you succeed: Cuno gains respect for you. It makes earning his trust easier in future interactions and applies a positive modifier to a later Empathy check.
If you fail (swing and a miss): You will need to buy Cuno cigarettes to make amends. Not ideal, but recoverable.
If you choose not to punch him: Cuno sees Harry as weak. This applies a negative modifier to a future check and makes it significantly harder to earn his respect going forward.
So, assuming you can pass the check, it is worth punching Cuno when given the opportunity. The follow-up Empathy check afterward reframes the whole interaction if you succeed on both.
What to Say to Cuno About Cunoesse
Cunoesse is Cuno's closest companion, and any attempt to criticize her will backfire. The game gives you options to suggest that she is a bad influence or that Cuno should distance himself. Do not take them.
- Avoid framing Cunoesse as a problem.
- Do not attempt to shoot Cunoesse during the scene at the body. Even selecting that option is damaging to your relationship with Cuno.
- If you actually succeed in shooting Cunoesse, the game presents a unique game-over screen. There is no coming back from it.
Cuno's loyalty to Cunoesse is complicated. The Legendary Empathy check reveals that it is actually Cunoesse who keeps winding him up and driving a wedge between him and others. He is protective of her but also intimidated by her, particularly because of her suspected involvement in a homicide. Respecting that loyalty rather than challenging it is what keeps his arc alive.
Split a Kilo with Cuno: Should You Give Him the Drugs?
The "Split a Kilo with Cuno" task is one of the game's more consequential choices. To unlock it, you first need to be on decent terms with Cuno. He will tell you his dad is a "major supplier" of speed and ask you to retrieve drugs from his apartment.
How to complete the task: Head to apartment #12 in the Capeside Apartments (enter from the southern entrance, it is just to the right). You will need the chain cutters from Kim's toolbox and must pass an Interfacing check to get inside. Explore the rooms and grab the drug vial from the living room table. Return to Cuno to make your decision.
Regardless of which option you choose, you earn 70 XP for completing the task.
Option 1: Give Cuno the Drugs
Splitting the kilo with Cuno damages your standing with Kim Kitsuragi, who strongly disapproves of the decision. However, if Kim ends up hospitalized after the Tribunal event, Cuno becomes available as a temporary partner. Giving him the drugs earlier is strongly tied to making that recruitment possible, and completing it unlocks the "Recruit Detective Kuuno de Ruyter" achievement.
Option 2: Keep the Drugs
Keeping the kilo for yourself preserves your relationship with Kim but causes Cuno to dislike you significantly. From a pure outcome perspective, keeping the drugs is the simpler path, but it sacrifices the most interesting version of Cuno's arc.
The best outcome for most players is to give Cuno the drugs if you are investing in his storyline, and accept the temporary reputation hit with Kim.
Key Skill Checks Involving Cuno
Disco Elysium's skill system shapes every Cuno conversation. Here are the checks worth preparing for:
|
Skill |
Difficulty |
What It Does |
|
Empathy |
Legendary (passive) |
Reveals the root of Cuno's behavior, opens better dialogue, and gets him on your side |
|
Physical Instrument |
Challenging (red active) |
Punching Cuno earns his respect and applies a positive modifier to the follow-up Empathy check |
|
Conceptualization |
Easy (passive) |
+25 XP for the pig-head comment at his shack |
|
Interfacing |
Active check |
Required to break into Cuno's apartment for the kilo task |
The Legendary Empathy check is the most important. If your base Empathy is not high enough, use clothing items that boost it before triggering the conversation. Punching Cuno first also grants a bonus modifier to this specific check, making it slightly easier to pass.
Cuno's Best Ending

Near the end of the game, during the final debriefing, you can petition Jean Vicquemare to recruit Cuno as a junior officer. No XP reward, no mechanical benefit. The payoff is entirely narrative: redirecting a troubled kid away from drugs and self-destruction, and the game acknowledges it quietly.
To reach this ending:
-
Build rapport early by respecting his pride and not condescending.
-
Pass the Legendary Empathy check to unlock deeper dialogue.
-
Give him the drugs during the kilo task.
-
Recruit him as a temporary partner after Kim is hospitalized during the Tribunal.
-
Complete the investigation with Cuno at your side on the Sea Fortress.
-
Petition Jean Vicquemare to recruit Cuno during the final debriefing.
One thing to note: unlike Kim, Cuno does not have a camera, so if he is your partner for the Sea Fortress sequence, you will be unable to photograph evidence of the Insulindian Phasmid.

FAQs
1. How do I pass the Cuno Empathy check in Disco Elysium?
The Empathy check with Cuno is rated at Legendary difficulty. Boosting Empathy through clothing and items is the most reliable method. Punching Cuno first (and succeeding on the Physical Instrument Challenging check) also grants a positive modifier to this specific Empathy check, making it easier to pass.
2. What happens if you fail all Cuno skill checks?
Failing the key checks limits Cuno's dialogue to surface-level hostility. You lose out on XP, backstory, and the ability to recruit him later. He remains in the game but functions as a minor NPC rather than a character with a full arc.
3. Can you recruit Cuno as a partner?
Yes. If Kim Kitsuragi is shot and hospitalized during the Tribunal, Cuno can volunteer to be Harry's partner and accompany him to the Sea Fortress. To unlock this, you need to have maintained a good rapport with Cuno and given him the drugs during the kilo task. Completing the game with Cuno and then convincing Jean Vicquemare to recruit him to the RCM unlocks the "Recruit Detective Kuuno de Ruyter" achievement.
4. What does Cuno do if you ignore him entirely?
Ignoring Cuno means missing substantial XP, a unique achievement, and one of the more emotionally resonant side arcs in the game. He has no impact on the main investigation if ignored, but skipping him is widely considered one of the first-time players' biggest regrets.
5. Is Cuno a good or bad person?
Cuno is a 12-year-old product of a neglectful and abusive environment. He uses drugs to keep his brain distracted and avoid coping with his emotions. The game does not frame him as evil, just damaged. How he turns out depends entirely on the choices you make.
