5 Teams To Watch At CWL Champs 2019
The world’s best Call of Duty teams are in Los Angeles this week competing in the 2019 Call of Duty World League Championship. With a $2,000,000 prize pool and a Championship title on the line, the best action of the year is taking center stage.
The event is the highlight of the Call of Duty season. Here are five teams to keep an eye on as the tournament commences:
1. FaZe Clan
Roster: ZooMaa, Celium, Asim, Skrapz, Zer0
Year after year, FaZe Clan is among the top teams at the Call of Duty Championship. They’ve fielded a roster at all but one Championship and have never placed below 7th-8th place. Though FaZe has two 3rd place finishes under their belt, including in 2018, the organization is still looking for their first Grand Final appearance. 2019 could be their year.
The Black Ops 4 season has been a bumpy one for FaZe Clan. In a series of upsets during Pro League qualification, FaZe failed to make the league. But in April, FaZe Clan purchased a Pro League spot from defunct Red Reserve and signed several of their former players.
As the season went on, FaZe continued to improve. After finishing 5th-6th in the Pro League regular season, FaZe peaked with a 3rd place finish in the Playoffs. The team will still be riding that high as they enter the Call of Duty Championship in Pool C as the favorites among Units, Mazer Gaming, and Animosity eSports.
2.Team Heretics
Roster: Lucky, JurNii, MethodZ, MeTTaIZ, Wartex
The Spanish team enters the Call of Duty World League Championship as a Pro League participant in Pool H along with Splyce, Aspire eSports, and Hybrid Gaming.
Black Ops 4 has been good to Team Heretics. After competing in the Spanish LVP Call of Duty league since 2016, Team Heretics qualified for the Call of Duty World League after a series of good performances leading up to the Pro League Qualifier. By the end of the season, Team Heretics went 10-12 to finish 4th in their division among the world’s best.
The Call of Duty World Championship is not unknown to Team Heretics. In 2018, the organization qualified but was eliminated in pool play with a 1-2 match count.
This year, Team Heretics enters as a favorite to move into the Winner’s Bracket of the Knockout Stage. They will rely on the experience of MethodZ, who will be making his fourth appearance at the event, to continue to make new history for the Spanish Call of Duty scene.
3. 100 Thieves
Roster: Kenny, Octane, SlasheR, Enable, Preistahh
After a fantastic season in the Call of Duty World League, 100 Thieves are looking to make a splash at the Call of Duty World League Championship. They enter pool play in Pool F along with Midnight Esports, Sicario Gaming, and FURY Gaming.
100 Thieves went 17-5 in the Pro League to finish 2nd in their division, but the true highlights of their season were back-to-back wins at CWL London and CWL Anaheim. The team is no stranger to the pressure of the Grand Finals. Made up of veteran Call of Duty stars, 100 Thieves have a handful of tournament wins among them and a Call of Duty Champion in SlasheR, who won on Black Ops 3 with Team Envy.
Look for 100 Thieves to make a run all the way to Championship Sunday.
4. eUnited
Roster: Arcitys, Prestinni, Clayster, aBezy, Simp
This eUnited roster has only underperformed at one LAN event this year: a 13th-16th finish at CWL Fort Worth. Otherwise, few teams can boast such a successful Black Ops 4 season. eUnited made three Grand Final appearances and won most recently at the Pro League Finals in Miami. They also finished the Pro League season with the best record in the league at 18-4. A long run through the Knockout Stage this weekend would be a good bet for eUnited.
At the 2019 Call of Duty World League Championship, eUnited will be led by team captain Clayster, a long-time Call of Duty pro who became a Champion in 2015 with Denial Esports. They take on Elevate, Celtic FC Esports, and RBL Esports in Pool A.
5. Elevate
Roster: ProFeeZy, Wailers, MRuiz, Believe, Lacefield
Pool Play will be a tough way to start the 2019 Call of Duty World Championship for Elevate. They find themselves in Pool A along with Pro League Finals Champions eUnited and Amateur Finals Champs Celtic FC Esports. It might be fair to say this is the pool of death, but if Elevate can work their way into the Winner’s Bracket, they can do anything in this tournament.
The players on Elevate have been to their fair share of Call of Duty Championships, so look for them to make a statement this weekend.
