You can only play Deadlock if a friend who already has it invites you on Steam. Valve's store page still says access is "limited to friend invites via our playtesters" and lists the release date as "to be announced."

That hasn't stopped the playtest from growing. Valve's City Never Sleeps update at the end of September rebuilt the map and added six new heroes, and it pushed player counts to new highs.

Here's how to get an invite, install the game, and what to know before your first match.

Can You Play Deadlock Right Now?

Yes, but only by invitation. Valve's Steam page for Deadlock says access is limited to friend invites from existing playtesters, and the page lists the release date as "to be announced."

There is no public download, no open sign-up and no confirmed release window. Third-party sites guess at 2027, but that is speculation, not a Valve statement. We'll update this guide if Valve says otherwise.

How to Get a Deadlock Invite

      1. Check your Steam friends. Open Deadlock's Steam page. The sidebar shows which of your friends have the game. A real friend is the fastest route.
      2. Ask in the community if nobody does. The Deadlock subreddit and the community Discord servers run invite threads. Post your Steam friend code and be careful with strangers: never share your password or pay for an invite.
      3. Accept the friend request from the playtester who finds you.
      4. Wait for the invite. The playtester opens the main menu and chooses to invite a friend. Valve says invites typically process within a day or two, and many players report minutes to hours.
      5. Accept the notification on Steam. It appears under the bell icon. Deadlock then shows up in your library.

Players report that Steam accounts with no purchases (limited accounts) can't receive invites. That comes from community sources rather than Valve, so make sure your account is out of limited status before you ask someone to spend an invite on you.

      Download, Install and System Requirements

Once the invite is accepted, install Deadlock from your Steam library like any other game. Insider Gaming puts the install at about 30 GB, so keep room on an SSD.

Valve has not set official system requirements. The Steam page lists the operating system, processor and graphics card as TBD, with only a 64-bit system required. Community estimates of a GTX 1060 or RX 580 class card with 8 GB RAM as a floor are guesses, so treat them as such.

What Changed in the City Never Sleeps Update

City Never Sleeps is the biggest change to Deadlock since the January heroes update. Valve posted it on Steam news as "Deadlock - City Never Sleeps" at the end of September, and it reworks most of the New York-style map.

      • Map The three lanes, Broadway, Greenwich and York, were reworked. Four new districts (Theater, Chinatown, Haunted Lot and Plaza), two new objectives and nine new neutral enemies were added, according to Beebom's patch summary.
      • Six new heroes Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba and Violet. They unlock over time based on votes made in the new pregame lobby. Valve's own balance notes already cover Rat King, Baba and Deadman Danny, so those three are live.
      • The Broker A temporary merchant that swaps high-tier items for Corrupted versions with random drawbacks. He stays only until the first new hero is released, per Beebom, so he may already be gone.
      • Interface Players can hide player names above health bars or switch them to hero names, and Down Dash can now be rebound, per Valve's September 30 notes.

Third-party trackers reported a new concurrent-player record after the update. Sources disagree on the exact number, so we won't quote one.

      What Is Deadlock?

Deadlock is Valve's 6v6 third-person hero shooter with MOBA mechanics, built on Source 2, the engine behind Counter-Strike 2. Two teams push troopers down lanes to break towers and finally the enemy Patron.

You earn Souls from troopers, neutral camps and kills, then spend them in the shop on weapon and ability upgrades. Matches commonly run 30 to 45 minutes.

Your First Matches: What to Do

      • Run the tutorial and a Sandbox session first. Sandbox lets you test heroes and items with no pressure.
      • Stay in your lane during the early game and focus on last-hitting troopers for Souls.
      • Buy one core item before you take risky fights.
      • Watch the minimap for neutral camp respawns and for enemy rotations.
      • Pick one hero for your first ten games. With six new heroes in the pool, resist the urge to hop.

Which Route Should You Take? A Quick Decision Table

      Your situation Best move
You have a Steam friend with Deadlock Ask them to invite you from the main menu.
Nobody you know plays Use the community invite threads and keep your account details private.
You only have a Steam Deck Wait for official support. The workaround is unsupported.
You want a guaranteed release Wishlist the game and wait. Valve has set no date.

      Plan for Long Matches

A 30 to 45 minute match is a long sit. Set up your snacks and water before you queue, and take your breaks between games, not during a teamfight. If you want a caffeinated option, the plug below covers G FUEL Energy and the caffeine-free Supreme Hydration.

      Fuel for the Long Matches

Deadlock games run 30 to 45 minutes, and a bad lane can drag a session out even longer.

A lot of players keep a shaker of G FUEL Energy Formula next to the desk for sessions like this: zero sugar, 140 mg of caffeine per serving and 40 servings per tub. For the breaks between matches, G FUEL Supreme Hydration brings electrolytes with zero caffeine.
