5 Best New Pokémon Coming to Pokémon Sword and Shield
Along with the November 15th release of the newest Pokemon game, Pokemon Sword and Shield, there is a new region that players can fully explore: the UK-inspired Galar region. It has been showcased as one of the biggest and most immersive Pokemon worlds of any game.
Nintendo has showcased the new wild zone where players can capture Pokemon in different themed biomes. With these new areas and regions to find Pokemon, there, of course, is the new Pokemon coming to Sword and Shield.
In the past, Nintendo has added around 100 new Pokemon each time they unveil a new region, and we can assume this will remain the case when it comes to Sword and Shield. To date, Nintendo has announced multiple new Pokemon coming to Sword and Shield.
So, what are some of the coolest and best Pokemon coming to Pokemon Sword and Shield?
Let’s explore!
Disclaimer: We will not be including the starter or legendary Pokemon on our list!
1. Corviknight – Steel/Flying Type
Pokemon Database/Nintendo
The first Pokemon on our list was one of the later ones introduced by Nintendo: Corviknight the flying/steel bird Pokemon. Seen in multiple Pokemon Sword and Shield trailers flying around the wild zone, we were finally graced with its typing and name a while ago. Immediately after it was introduced, many fans were already in love with this new bird type Pokemon. If you didn’t already know, bird type Pokemon are some of the most loved and sought after Pokemon from any trainer.
What makes Corviknight so unique and loved is how much it resembles a generation three Pokemon that is still loved by fans. The Pokemon we are talking about is, of course, Skarmory. These two Pokemon draw similar traits as they both possess the same typing and give off an angry demeanor. There’s no better way to kick off this list than with one of the most universally loved additions coming to Pokemon Sword and Shield.
2. Obstagoon – Dark/Normal Type
Bulbapedia/Nintendo
Coming in next on our list is Obstagoon, the dark and normal type Pokemon that was revealed at one of the earlier Galar research updates. This Pokemon resembles a sinister werewolf/raccoon-like animal, and it takes the cake for perhaps the scariest Pokemon Nintendo has announced thus far. When you combine its evil eyes with the fact that its tongue is always sticks out, this may be one of the most unique designs Nintendo has come up with in quite some time.
Not only does Obstagoon look the part, but its typing also makes it a rather unique Pokemon. Its dark-normal typing is one that is used very little in previous Pokemon games, as these two typings do not affect each other usually. But together, they make one of the coolest combinations yet. It is unknown how useful Obstagoon will be in actual Pokemon battles, but its appearance and typing makes it one of the best new Pokemon that Nintendo has unveiled so far.
3. Duraludon – Steel/Dragon Type
Bulbapedia/Nintendo
Duraludon, the newest dragon type Pokemon created by Nintendo, has already been dubbed by fans as one of the strongest Pokemon coming to Sword and Shield, even though they don’t know much about it yet. Dragon-type Pokemon are historically some of the most overpowered Pokemon in the history of the franchise. A lot of these Pokemon are eventually dubbed the sub-class “Pseudo-legendary.” This means they have a three-stage evolution line, 1,250,000 experience at level 100, and a base stat total of 600 before Mega Evolving.
With the expectations that dragon Pokemon have, it comes as no surprise that Duraludon is on our list. Along with the fact that it is a dragon-type, it also has the dual-typing of steel type, which is one of the rarest typings for Pokemon. This is one of, if not the first, steel-dragon typing Pokemon we have seen in any Pokemon title, which adds to Duraludon’s attraction level amongst Pokemon fans. Duraludon is sure to be a hit, and we can’t wait to see if it lives up to that pseudo-legendary status.
4. Polteageist - Ghost Type
Bulbapedia/Nintendo
Second to last on our list is Polteageist. The little Pokemon stuffed inside of a teacup was one of the last Pokemon that Nintendo teased us with before the official Sword and Shield release. In perhaps one of Nintendo’s funniest and weirdest concept designs of a Pokemon, we now have a ghost type Pokemon that has taken home inside of a teacup and can be seen poking out every time it attacks. When Polteageist was initially announced, there was a mixed reaction from fans as to whether or not they liked this new Pokemon. Admittedly, it is a rather bizarre concept for everyone to get behind.
Nevertheless, this Pokemon deserves a spot on our list. Don’t forget that this is also a ghost type Pokemon, which is another typing that is very desirable by players and is seen as one of the best in the game. It is still up for debate whether or not Polteageist will be a viable Pokemon throughout the story, but its design and potential for greatness has us sold.
5. Sirfetch'd - Fighting Type
Bulbapedia/Nintendo
Rounding off our list of the best Pokemon coming to Pokemon Sword and Shield is none other than Sirfetch’d. Sirfetch’d is the final and only evolution of Farfetch’d. The flying-type Pokemon was one of the original 151 Pokemon and has never received any type of evolution or different region form, so it was a massive milestone for this Pokemon. And fans are hooked on the idea of Sirfetch’d because of it.
Other than it being the successor of Farfetch’d, this Pokemon took over the internet for many other reasons. As soon as it was announced, fans across the world posted a ton different memes about it online because the sword that it’s holding is a green onion. Ditching the flying-type, it was has been immersed as royal guard of the UK army and has found a sword and shield to go along with its new appearance. Sirfetch’d could very well be one of the most average Pokemon throughout the entire game, but because of the popularity that it has already attracted, we see it as one of the best Pokemon. One that will for sure be talked about for years to come, and be featured throughout the anime and in ads around the world.
