Personal Life

Roman Bernard Atwood was born on May 28, 1983, in Millersport, Ohio. He grew up in Millersport, attending middle school and high school in the town’s public school system. His father, Curt Dale Atwood, owns a rope company—where Roman worked before starting his YouTube career—and a toy store. His brother, Dale, is also a YouTuber with over 1 million subscribers, though he hasn’t uploaded a new video to his channel in about three years. Atwood’s mother, Susan, was one of her son’s greatest supporters before tragically passing away in 2019.

Atwood has three kids, two with his wife and current partner Brittney Smith-Atwood and one with Shanna Riley, with whom Atwood was married between 2001 and 2008. Atwood and Smith-Atwood have been together since 2008, when they met at the wedding of Atwood’s friend and fellow YouTuber Chase Gilroy. They’ve been married since 2018, celebrating their nuptials in a stunning ceremony in Maui, Hawaii, and are currently expecting their third child, announcing the pregnancy in a video on Atwood’s channel.

Alongside his human family, Atwood also has a menagerie of pets, including two cats named Nitro and Tux, a Siberian Husky named Flash, a donkey named Empire, and a tank full of fish. Another of Roman’s pets, a German Shepherd named Zeus, passed away in 2017.

In 2020, Atwood entered a surprise hiatus from uploading videos, with no new content appearing on his channel between December 2019 and August 2020, when he uploaded a mysterious video promising to explain the reason for his break. Though the video is light on details, Atwood said that there was a valid reason for the hiatus, with “absolute craziness” behind the scenes, and promised to provide his fans with more information as soon as he was able.

Atwood is also a tattoo addict, with ink dedicated to his children and family all over his chest and arms. He got his first tattoo, a Hollywood star emblazoned with his father’s name, in 2006, and has a multitude of other designs unrelated to his family, such as a tattoo depicting the Statue of Liberty.

Career

YouTube

Atwood’s first foray into professional video making came in 2006, when he produced and sold DVDs titled “The Nerd Herd” at Warped Tour events. He uploaded the first video to his prank channel, RomanAtwood, on YouTube in 2009, though the current oldest video available on the channel was uploaded in 2011.

At the beginning of his YouTube career, Atwood was best known as a prank master; his breakout came in 2012, when he uploaded a viral video titled “Cops Get Owned!!! - Epic Pee Prank.” The video featured Atwood’s fellow YouTube prankster Dennis Roady pretending to urinate in public in front of a group of policemen. Roady and Atwood have since collaborated on a number of videos, even starring together (alongside YouTuber Vitaly Zdorovetskiy) in a 2016 feature film named Natural Born Pranksters.

In 2013, Atwood began to move his career in a different direction, starting a vlog channel that primarily focuses on content showcasing his life with his family rather than the pranks for which he had previously been known. He also began producing a merchandise line, Smile More, to support his mission to spread positivity and cheer through his videos. Nowadays, Atwood’s most popular videos are vlogs about important events in his life, such as his decision to propose to his girlfriend and the birth of his youngest daughter, Cara. Still, longtime fans of Atwood will remember his hilarious older prank videos, which saw him get up to antics such as filling his house with plastic ball-pit balls before Brittney came home. Atwood currently has over 15.4 million subscribers and 5.3 billion views on his vlog channel and 10.5 million subscribers and 1.5 billion views on his prank channel.

Acting/Filmmaking

Atwood has appeared as himself in a number of television shows and movies, but he has also dabbled in acting, most recently in the Logan Paul-powered film Airplane Mode, in which Atwood had a cameo role as an airport security guard. In 2016, he appeared in a video on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s YouTube channel as a fictionalized version of himself, and he also appeared in several sketches produced by the group Bad Weather Films in 2014.

In 2016, Atwood wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the feature film Natural Born Pranksters alongside YouTubers Dennis Roady and Vitaly Zdorovetskiy. His other producing credits include Roman Atwood’s Day Dreams, a 2017 YouTube Red show, and Roman Vs. Fousey, a behind-the-scenes documentary about Atwood’s live tour with YouTuber Yousef “Fousey” Erakat.

Tour

In 2016, Atwood teamed up with fellow YouTuber Yousef “Fousey” Erakat to put together a live show titled “Roman Vs. Fousey.” Billed as an “epic comedy showdown,” the show featured an on-stage battle between the pair for the title of Ultimate Jokester, with on-stage challenges, zany impressions, and rap battles to keep the competition fresh. Fousey and Atwood took the show on a five-city tour with stops in Portland, Oregon, Seattle, Washington, and San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles in California, and have performed together in Canada and the United Kingdom.

Writing

In 2017, Atwood published a book-length memoir titled Will Work for Smiles. The book is 256 pages long and was published by Gallery Press.
