Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is packed with strange encounters, and the cup and ball game on Knowhere ranks among the most memorable. A disembodied brain dangles from the ceiling, runs a shell game, and either rewards your focus or robs you blind. Knowing which outcome you get is the difference between walking away with 1000 Galactic Units or losing your credits to a cosmic scammer.
Where to Find the Cup and Ball Game

The cup and ball game is located in Chapter 6: "Between a Rock and a Hard Place," during the Guardians' visit to Knowhere. After the team arrives and splits up, Peter can explore the station solo. The brain running the game is visible in the market area, hanging from the ceiling, and ready to take your units. IGN describes the encounter as a game of three-card monte run by "a big brain."
How the Game Works
The brain presents three cups on a table. One of the cups hides a ball. The cups shuffle before stopping, and you pick the one hiding the ball.
To prove the game is legitimate, the brain offers a low-risk introductory bet costing 25 Galactic Units. The cups move very slowly on this first round, making it almost impossible to lose track of the ball.
Round 1: Play It and Win
Watch the ball as the cups move. The shuffle is slow enough that losing track is nearly impossible if you stay focused. Pick the correct cup, confirm your choice, and the brain pays out 1000 Galactic Units. No tricks, no gimmicks, just a straightforward payout.
Steps to win:
Approach the brain and agree to play. Keep your eyes on the cup hiding the ball throughout the shuffle. Select the correct cup when the shuffling stops. Collect your 1000 Galactic Units reward.
Round 2: Walk Away
After winning the first round, the brain pushes you to play again for 1500 Galactic Units. Do not do it. The second round is rigged and cannot be won. Even if you track the ball perfectly and pick the correct cup, the brain cheats. The ball disappears, and you walk away 1500 Galactic Units worse off. When Peter calls the brain out, the brain simply bails.
The cup and ball game is one of several Knowhere encounters designed to drain your units. The slot machine costs 500 units and always "breaks" before paying out. The lottery ticket costs 1000 units with no way to win the jackpot. Among all of these, the cup game is the only one that gives you a genuine opportunity to come out ahead, but only if you stop after the first win.
Why Galactic Units Matter
Galactic Units are the currency used throughout the game to purchase items from vendors on Knowhere. Depending on choices made in earlier chapters, Peter arrives at Knowhere with roughly 7,000-9,000 units. Between the cup game, lottery, slot machine, food vendor, vending machine plushies (750 units), the Collector's Emporium Doll (2,000 units), and the Nova Force Lock Disabler (1,500 units), the game gives you plenty of ways to spend or waste those credits.
Winning 1000 GU from the cup game offsets some of those costs and leaves more room for purchases that actually matter. The Collector's Emporium Doll is a gift for Gamora, and the Disabler provides a humorous interaction with Rocket back on the Milano, so having extra units lets you experience more content without going broke.
Also worth noting: if you enter Mantlo's Bar early and sing along with Lipless, Peter earns a free Collector's Emporium Ticket. Without it, the Emporium entrance costs 5,000 units. That free ticket is arguably a bigger save than the cup game itself, but stacking both wins gives you the most financial flexibility in the chapter.
Tips for Knowhere Spending
Do first: Enter Mantlo's Bar and sing with Lipless for the free Emporium ticket. Play the cup game once and collect 1000 GU.
Skip: The slot machine (500 GU, always breaks), the lottery ticket (1000 GU, cannot win), and the second round of the cup game (1500 GU, rigged).
Optional fun purchases: Collector's Emporium Doll (2000 GU, gift for Gamora), vending machine plushie (750 GU, compendium entry), Nova Force Lock Disabler (1500 GU, funny interaction on the Milano).
Do not miss: The Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) Star-Lord outfit is found in a chest near the area where children are playing. Do not interact with the kids (they steal your money), but jump over the railing behind them to find the chest underneath the stairs. This is free.
Stay Focused Through the Story

The cup and ball game rewards the same skill that carries you through the rest of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: sharp attention under pressure. Long sessions demand sustained focus, whether you are tracking enemies, managing team abilities, or making story choices that lock in consequences.

Winning the first round rewards 1000 Galactic Units on a 25 GU bet. That is the maximum payout from this game.
2. Can you win the second round of the cup and ball game?
No. The second round is scripted to cheat regardless of which cup you pick. The ball disappears, and you lose 1500 Galactic Units. Always stop after the first round.
3. Where exactly is the cup and ball game?
It is on Knowhere during Chapter 6: "Between a Rock and a Hard Place." The brain running the game hangs from the ceiling in the market area and is visible as you explore the station.

Yes, once. Winning the first round gives you a clean 1000 GU payout on a 25 GU bet. Playing a second time guarantees a loss. One round, one win, done.
