History and Career

Though xQc has been a gamer for his whole life, his career as an online personality didn’t begin with Overwatch. Growing up in Quebec, Canada, his first passion was extreme sports. Teaming up with a childhood friend, xQc created his first YouTube videos by pulling off bold stunts and impressive tricks on skateboards, snowboards, and even trampolines.

Over time, xQc’s interest in extreme sports waned, and his friend eventually moved away, leaving him without a cameraman to film any of his tricks. While searching for a new outlet for his creative energies, he decided to turn his casual love for gaming into a career, embarking on a quest to become a professional League of Legends player. Through League, xQc discovered Twitch and was immediately impressed by the entertaining personalities of popular streamers such as Tyler1. Though his League of Legends skills were not at the professional level, xQc decided to follow in these streamers’ footsteps and become a Twitch personality.

In 2016, everything changed when xQc discovered Overwatch. He soon found that he was perfectly attuned to the game, regularly making high-level plays that were far more impressive than anything he had accomplished in League of Legends. Soon enough, xQc’s Overwatch skills began attracting attention from people in high places. In the summer of 2016, he began his professional gaming career in earnest by joining DatZit Gaming, an esports team based in Montreal. In August of that year, he lifted an Overwatch trophy for the first time, winning the Overwatch tournament at DreamHack Montreal 2016 alongside his teammates in DatZit.

With his reputation as a top Overwatch player secured, xQc was soon picked up by Denial eSports in October 2016. Though this team didn’t make waves in the competitive Overwatch scene, xQc marched forward in his quest to become an Overwatch pro, participating in the first iteration of Overwatch Contenders and several other tournaments as a member of a number of other teams. In October 2017, his dream was realized when he joined the Dallas Fuel.

xQc eventually parted ways with the Dallas Fuel in 2018. He began focusing more and more on his streaming career, though he kept one foot in competitive play, playing alongside various Contenders teams from 2018 through late 2019. It soon became clear that his talents were best matched to the life of a streamer. In October 2020, he joined Luminosity Gaming as a full-time streamer and content creator.

Since he embraced his role as a streamer, xQc’s star has risen exponentially, with the Canadian currently boasting over 40,000 subscribers and nearly 3.5 million followers. Nowadays, xQc is one of the most-watched streamers on Twitch, with fans tuning in from all over the world to watch his entertaining gameplay and wild real-life antics. His YouTube account has also popped off, reaching one million subscribers in September 2020. xQc is constantly looking for new ways to improve his stream and expand his following—for example, he only began playing chess on his stream in the spring of 2020. For this charismatic and idiosyncratic Canadian streamer, the sky is truly the limit.

Gaming and Streaming Setup

xQc’s gaming and streaming setup has improved considerably since he created his first YouTube video using a Hello Kitty camcorder that his father rescued from a dumpster. His gaming computer uses an Intel Core i9-9900K processor alongside an EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics card and an Asus Republic of Gamers SWIFT PG258Q monitor. He keeps his gameplay crisp using a Logitech G Pro wireless gaming mouse and a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate keyboard. To communicate with his fans, he uses a HyperX Cloud II headset, a Logitech BRIO webcam, and a Shure SM7B microphone.
